Have your players find common ground with the villain first, share values and goals together, then split them at the means they employ, force them to make a choice according to their values.

Plate of eating. Food placed on the plate is magically eaten up by the plate. A delicacy for those who wish to confuse their patrons, or just those who have some well... eccentric tastes, as in order for someone using the plate to have a proper meal, they must eat the plate, having the taste and nutrition of all the meals that the plate had eaten.

It’s a pretty simple solution, there’s always going to be somebody bigger and badder than you and with the ability to create overpowered villains or just NPC’s in general and with 10th level spells, you can kind of get your high-level party to behave

I created my first dnd character He is a former dwarven prince who was disowned and thrown out of his kingdom for being a drunken barbarian and for not being able to do anything useful other than drinking and fighting with everyone The last straw was when he beat up his older brother which resulted in him being exiled and now he travels the world doing whatever he wants in order to get alcohol.

I was the dm. It was a small group, me my wife my brother and his wife. I laid a curse on my brother's PC, a silver dragonborn. He was driven to consume living flesh or he'd go insane with hunger and just start killing and eating everything. His PC has a thing about the fae realm, so when the party inevitably ended up there I had him role to overcome his fear and eat fairies and such. He failed every damn roll. When they finally got out of the realm he ended up slaughtering a bunch of people in a small village when the party went to rest due to yet another failed roll. Think Anakin and the tusken raiders. He ended up being hunted down by the survivors and eventually was turned over by the rest of the party.

I was once playing a half-orc paladin with a homebrewed orclord prestige class that gave various bonuses to allies in combat. As I was leveling and gaining these abilities, I decided not to use any of them for multiple levels. One day, my DM had this massive overwhelming battle planned where the ACs were just outside of my party's normal reach, and we had to fight multiple waves of these creatures (Sidenote: Powergamer DMs really take combat too seriously sometimes). It was at this point that I let open the flood gates, and these abilities came roaring out, turning the entire fight from a grueling challenge to a walk in the park. My DM was just baffled that he did not see it coming.

It was several rulings in quick succession. 1. A specialized fey creature of his own design was making uncomfortable amorous advances, wouldn't stop, and was immune to everything. 2. Another player was allowed to make a "called shot" and shoot my character directly in the eye. 3. When I went to retaliate against that player, suddenly an attack roll against AC wasn't good enough, the player was also granted a Reflex save to "just not be in the square I'm attacking". It was at that moment I realized that bad D&D really is worse than no D&D.

Lol funny i see this vid now because im not the DM but this is a funny thing that happened just yesterday during a discord DnD Sesh which i immediately got the joke/reference but one of the other people didnt get it until i pointed it out didnt take too long but still took awhile xD. The party had just arrived at the home of a more recent party member who was also a part of a Religious Army called the Hammer and Nail (The Character is called Erika and she isnt an npc but a part of the party). We arrive at her manor as a festival is soon to be held but until the festival starts Erika leads the party through a hidden passage to an area where an artifact is held a Mirror...once the party looked into the mirror and this Mirror can show you a world another version of yourself and how their life is and what they are doing. So one of my characters (A Kitsune Lynx named Ice) looks into the mirror (had to roll a d10 no modifiers to see which version of the character we see) and the version of himself Ice saw was himself in Royal Garbs, a long spear, his father's crown(he and his sister Snow are the prince and princess of Akira and essentially in the sessions the two are in Akira is essentially like Gerudo in Legend of Zelda in which its mainly comprised of Women but unlike Gerudo in games like Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom men are allowed in. Also since the Siblings father was the only man in Akira at the time he was made king.) And an Eye Patch. One of other party members(npc this time) made a comment that Ice looks good in an eyepatch with her calling him 'Dimitri'. Then one of other party members had gotten two separate glances into the mirror (with the DM saying two looks from one character is the limit) and one version of him was him as a female fighting alongside his/her mothers, the next version was him in Black Armor, fully in his WearLion form and in a *Beserk* wild animal like state. The person didn't catch on but i did i immediately got the Dimitri line and took another read of the comment that was of the other character to realize that it was a Reference to Guts from Beserk. My exact OOC (out of character) comment was "Lol just realized that one version of Zaj is essentially Guts from Beserk" (Zaj being shorthand for the character's full first name Zajiru) he was like "For Real?" And i pointed out the similarities 'Black Armor, acting like a wild animal, in a 'Beserk' state/form' only then did it set in for him xD the DM pointed out what i knew about the Dimitri like was referencing Fire Emblem Three houses and i told him i figured since the only reason i got both references was because of the Dimitri vs Guts Death Battle and it was so funny to see the guy who was playing Zajiru snap to and see the joke.

Confession.... im a newer DM running a Curse of Strahd campaign and have a few power gamers in my group. Knowing this before campaign start, i raised Strahds CR from an 18 normally to a CR30+. He is to help me keep those power players in check while the party as a whole formulates their next best course of action. As the party moves along, due to story reasons he will not be that strong when they fully fight him.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again if it breaks the game, don’t include it as a function your players will find enough ways to break the game on their own. You don’t need to give them extra leverage.

  • @Mekora

I've seen DMs argue online that knowing that blunt weapons are effective against skeletons is metagaming. Has nobody in their setting ever broken a bone? Sure, for Trolls the DM can decide how commonly known their weakness to acid and fire is, because trolls aren't real and are part of the fantasy setting, but bones are real, and it's likely that all of your players have some inside of them. Some of those players may have been in accidents that broke one or more of those bones, so they'd already know what kind of injuries are effective against skeletons before coming into a fantasy game with animated ones. Unless of course, the entire party is comprised of plasmoids, or incredibly sheltered nobles, which could be interesting.

So, I got a question… if a backstory establishes an entire faction outside of the main, world building plot, but fits within the setting, would that be okay? Like, would that character be able to interact with this previously undisclosed faction? What are the limits to how interconnected this faction is to the world? Could it actively retcon an entire established plot?

In defense of the DM that wouldn't let a player look behind themselves, that could have been the right call. The enemies weren't making any noise, which probably means they made some Stealth check that would go against Passive Perception. If the enemies succeeded the PC's Passive Perception, but not someone else's, it would be reasonable to have them visible on the map. Things like that happen all the time in my games. If that was the case (or even if no PC noticed the enemies and the DM still made them visible for any other reason), the player wanting to randomly look behind when there's a fight in front of them and complete silence behind them wouldn't make any sense. I mean, sure, if they heard something it would absolutely make sense, but otherwise it would be the player metagaming, trying to see the enemies that they know are there, while their character doesn't notice them. It could actually have been the right call. We would need more information to be sure, and preferably from the DM's point of view, but the possibility is there.

thing is, any creature is assumed to be aware of everything that isn't blocked from their view and succesfully hidden, that's why invisble creatures still need to take the hide action to go unnoticed, so unless it's said they took the hide action, everyone knows the enemie's whereabouts

The dumbest thing a dm said onto (no I did not play this campaign myself, just heard it from the sidelines) was a series of things. “No you cannot whip and nae nae to swing a sword” “No you cannot make an exercise ball out of steel” “NO. YOU WILL NOT MAKE SHREK” That dm played the entire session without complaints but there were so many things they had to say no to begin with that I think they’ve learned an entire new language with how many different ways to ask for the same stupid ideas. I mean, the worst one I heard before I had to get going was “Zu Bet Wawa, the orcish knight of thy swampland”

I was in a campaign with a few friends and my fiance at the time (now husband!). I was a tiefling bard, with an intelligence of 9. We were going up against a vampire lord, and i asked the dm (my fiance) if i could presuade the lord to give me his captive (a werewolf he was going to sacrifice under the full moon) and let me breed with her and give him the child. My fiance said roll persuasion. I rolled a Nat 20. He stared at my die and said "theres no way im letting her do this". He rolled a nat 1 against it. 😂 So i won the campaign and ruined the big battle. UNTIL a party member decided to hit him on the back of the head. My fiance was like "...what? She just won the campaign! Well now ya gotta fight." We beat the crap out of him. And my tiefling did marry the werewolf and had a child! Half Teifling half werewold named Raven. Why? Because my tiefling bard named Silence saw a raven crap on her when she was born and wanted to name her Raven sh*t (forgot the last name). The mother shot that down so fast, but liked Raven. 😂 Yes i have used her too! She is a lot smarter than her dad. But charismatic like him!

I am a female DM, and my "That Player" is my younger brother -_- Thankfully he's not a jerk nor is he sexist or racist or anything like that, but he doesn't like when he fails at things and is the very definition of a sore loser and a spoil sport. If he's doing good, everyone is having a good time, if he's failing, he's muttering under his breath and just oozing 'I'm not happy' vibes and it throws off everyone else's moods. God Forbid the days where the dice gods have turned their back on him so nothing that session is going his way, he's actually rage quit a session because of that before. To try to help this out I implemented two things, the first is a Home Rule where once per session, each player may re-roll anything of their choice in the moment, no questions asked, but they must accept that re-roll, so everyone had a chance to fix a badly timed nat 1 or just a sucky roll. The second thing I kept to myself, but I started doing this thing where when players are trying to accomplish something that is not combat related, where you need a certain roll or higher to succeed, instead what I do is if you get just 1, or 2, or sometimes 3 if it's really high, below the DC, I'll have you succussed, but in a weird or funny way. Example, my brother was trying to break down a heavy door, and he needed a 15 to do it, he got a 14, so this is what I described: "You kick the door, but as you make contact with the door, you feel a deep and sharp pop in the ball of your foot, making you fall backward onto your butt as you hastily rip off your boot to inspect for damage. As you are inspecting your foot to make sure nothing is broken, you hear a loud clang from in of you, and upon looking up, you see that although the door was made of heavy wood and metal, the frame it was attached to was not nearly as reinforced. The door, still locked and intact, lay flat on the floor, a plume of dust still flying around the air around its impact point, while the frame where it's hinges and lock were once attached, the wood was now splinted and broken." He had his movement speed reduced by 5ft for 3 turns to account for the limping during the following battle soon after that, but he succeeded, and everyone got a laugh out of that one.

  • @lucasstrong9208

I've tried many MANY times to leave plenty of open space in my sessions for the players to RP with each other or with NPCs, give them open ended quest requirements so they can figure out a few different ideas and pick one, but what always happens is they charge headfirst toward an idea without stopping to talk so the session is moving from place to place at breakneck speed since I don't put combat encounters to be around every corner to slow them down, or they are paralyzed by the inability to agree out of character on what to do next. Everybody says they don't want to be railroaded, but when the train doesn't move, the passengers get upset. More hilariously, I once gave them the quest to be a distraction for a different team that was gonna save a hostage and threw out 3 or 4 suggestions on distractions that might work to get them thinking of their own options if they wanted, but instead they decided to try and do everything I suggested at the same time AND rescue the hostage. It was hilarious to see them latch onto everything at once and split up to try and lay it out in a way they could align all the parts.

A way you could do the "Killed an entire bandit group" is if they're a Warlock. Than have it be that when they made the pact. To make sure the patron could live, they saved them once.

Dm of a Gundam 5e campaign, threw a cr 12 enemy at us when we were only level 1-3(don't remember exact level, only that this was session 1), did 5 attacks in a single turn only telling us "mounted weapons are a free action" AFTER KILLING A MEMBER OF THE PARTY, AND THEIR MOBILE SUIT, IN ONE TURN FROM FULL HEALTH, also, no, and when confronted they were revealed to have a god complex Mounted weapons in Gundam 5e are the same as any other weapon, they don't have rules allowing for "free action attacks" which should never be allowed in the first place. My friend and I both chewed out that DM and most of the group left the game after that, it was a 6 person party, I think 1 person stayed and that dm duped others into joining a revolving door of people joining and leaving the campaign. We had become friends with the person who stayed before leaving the campaign, so we heard about what happened after we left. The worst part was that the campaign was organized in a discord server of someone who reads dnd horror stories on youtube. It was like this dm took them as inspiration, rather than stories of what not to do.

The death cleric story is beat for beat the DLC from the the original Dragon's Dogma. One of my faorite games and an amazing DLC for high level characters. It would definitely make a really cool mega dungeon campaign. If you haven't played through it you show check it out.

The worst rule I've seen is applying the automatic fail of the Nat 1 attack and the automatic success of the Nat 20 attack to skill checks. It's not a deal breaker mind you, but it tends to be frustrating for both DM's and PC's. It means no matter how trained you are in a certain skill, you can always fumble it like a commoner, on the other hand things that are supposed to be really difficult can be resolved simply because a character got lucky and rolled a Nat 20. Unless the D.M. and the group are prepared for the utter chaos that a 5% chance of stats not meaning anything for every role made, it will be frustrating. Even when you are prepared for it, you are knowingly giving murphy's law free reign over the campaign. Which means that it's never a matter of if, but when your rolls hit those numbers that the story can shift dramatically.

Players captured dinosaurs. Wanted to breed them into a personal army. I told them it would take too long to do that, and on top of that, I don't want to have to figure out how long that would take. It would have completely derailed the campaign and it would have easily taken far longer to do than would be feasible for what they wanted to do with them. It was just one thing in a long list of strange requests that my players had. I already did so much work on the campaign for things they would, mid adventure, decide to abandon in favour of the next thing that distracted them.

I used a wish so that my Paladin smites always did maximum damage. Pretty great for critical hits. I worded the wish something akin to I wanted to be totally devoted to my oath in a way beyond the limit I could achieve alone.

I gave that guy a "Boastful Weapon," That guy was not being a team player. That guy had been caught stealing other players... A few times.. I made it simple. If you can describe in detail how you plan to make an actiom you get a +1. The sword approves. If you brag about your weapon to an opponent before you start the fight, you get a +2 to attacks. If you were able to help your weapon or your party the weapon approves. +3. Heyo guys, sometimes you gotta do.

I played a kobold fighter. I went to several shops to purchase new gear, armour and weapons generally. Nobody would ever sell me anything specifically because I was "too small and weak to carry anything" despite my strength being 18. The DM literally just wouldn't let me buy better items and that was the rational. I was stuck with a d6 shortsword until about level 18 until I said fuck it and the opportunity arose that I just stole a full set of armour and the 1d8 Morningstar myself. Genuinely what a nightmare campaign that was.

I DM a bit. My solution? Simply tell the player that it isn't a good idea. If they persist? Don't give the PC a chance. Simply state as the DM that the character(or characters) end up getting arrested in their sleep, or are surrounded mid-problem. I don't mind giving the players freedom, or even letting them be evil, but if the party isn't fully on board, and isn't in an evil campaign, I will refuse to let players be evil... I also let my players know in a session 0, so I've obly ever had to use this once- in my first campaign, before I made the rule. Everyone at the table was happier about it after we rolled new characters, and I had the group hunt the old party that was causing problems. Sadly, college and life stuff ended up putting that campaign in the grave.

I was the dm but I walked away. Was running a campaign with college friends. Things were fine for a few sessions. Getting to a point in the story that Drow involvement would come up. They took a long time in a hostile area so I had the leader of the camp start making her way there. My thought process on the elder was Drow society is matriarchal, so the head of this force would obviously be a woman. Out of nowhere the players start devising a trap with teamwork I've never seen. So I was like, alright, you're working together getting creative. That's cool. Let's lean into that. They get her trapped and shut her magic down. I'm thinking this is where the interrogation for details starts so I'm so lost in thought of coming up with what she knows and DC's for various charasma checks, I missed the part where they wanted to start stripping her. And doing....more...after that. I packed up and left right there and never met with them again. Made my skin crawl.
